When I was off work last week, I missed the news that UA client John Boyne celebrated joining the Millionaires Club, an exclusive band of authors who include Joanne Harris and Jodi Picoult, who have sold over a million copies of their books in the UK.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was published in 2006 and follows the story of nine-year old Bruno who lives in Germany under the Nazis. He is completely unaware of the barbarities of the regime until he meets a boy called Shmuel who lives a very different life from him – a life on the opposite side of a wire fence. And Shmuel is the eponymous boy in the striped pyjamas.
Supposedly aimed at children, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has a huge adult readership as well, given its universal theme of lost innocence. And of course there is the incredibly successful film.
You can buy the book HERE. I promise you, it’s definitely worth reading if you haven’t already.
And if you are not convinced, have a listen:
John’s next book is also for children. The Terrible Thing that Happened to Barnaby Brocket is due out in August and features a boy called Barnaby who can float … Can’t wait!
